BAF Competition Brief

Open to architects, professionals and all members of the community including students, the challenge of the Archway Design Competition is to come up with creative suggestions for the improvement and redevelopment of this important and much-neglected landmark site.

Points to consider:

  • The cost of demolishing the tower is very high because of the working tube station.
  • Roads and pavements could be improved.
  • Businesses and shops at Archway could be changed.
  • Existing buildings could be reused, recycled or replaced.
  • The site could have a mix of housing, leisure, business, and open space.
  • Ideas need to work well with the surrounding area.
  • Ideas can consider not just the buildings but social and economic issues, including sustainability.

What we are looking for

The judges will be equally interested in big picture and in small scale ideas, which can be integrated in an overall scheme.

Winning ideas from the competition will be used for a community-based master plan for the area that is being put together by the Better Archway Forum (BAF). This is a London community group which is creating is own agenda for the master planning of the area by utilising the talents of local architects and urban designers alongside those of local people.

The best ideas in each category will receive £100, with a runners-up prize of £50.

You can enter the competition as many times as you like and group or class submissions are accepted. BAF committee members and their families are not allowed to enter the competition.
